Is It Trash Day? And When It's Not

Spoiler: the schedule changed because of the holiday you forgot about.

By the South Silly Sanitation Correspondent

There are two kinds of people in this neighborhood: those who aren't sure when trash day is, and liars. The rest of us stand at the front window at 6:52 a.m. in a bathrobe, holding a bag, watching to see what the block does, because the block is the only calendar anyone trusts.

The system, on paper, is simple. In practice the schedule is a living document, revised nightly by rumor, and the true date is whatever your neighbor Ang did, because Ang has lived here since before the census and Ang has never once been wrong about garbage.

Then comes the holiday. Not the big obvious ones (you brace for those). It's the sneaky one, the mid-list federal holiday nobody marks on a calendar, that silently bumps the whole week back a day and detonates the entire block's sense of time. Suddenly it's Thursday behaving like a Wednesday, and half the street is out there in slippers, confused, betrayed, holding recycling.

We must also address the early people. Every block has a household that puts the cans out three days in advance, Saturday night for a Tuesday pickup, as if claiming territory. The cans sit there through the weekend, aging in the sun, a monument to somebody's deep and abiding fear of oversleeping. Nobody says anything. We just know whose they are.

And then there is the street sweeper: a mechanical rumor, a legend with a posted schedule that not one soul on the block has ever seen. The signs are right there. The dates are printed. The cars do not move. If the sweeper ever arrives, and no one is sure it ever has, its work is quickly obscured by the passage of time and the errant litter that escapes the cans on trash day.

So is it trash day? Look out the window. If the cans are out, it's trash day. If the cans are not out, it is either not trash day or you are about to be the cautionary tale the whole block texts about. Either way, put the bag down, and go see what Ang did.
